Knights Qualify Pair For State Tourney
GRAETTINGER – The Knights of Graettinger/Terril will have two representatives at the 2008 State Wrestling Championships this week in Des Moines. After Class 1A District action at Manson on Saturday, the Knights will send 103 pounder James Tatman and 189 pounder Jake Hoffman to the state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
At 189, Hoffman won a 9-3 decision over Cody Veggor of SE Webster and then pinned Tom Brinkman of Pocahontas Area in 1:42 for the title.
Wrestling at 103 pounds for the Knights, James Tatman won an 11-2 major decision in the first round over Kyle uhlenhopp of Belmond-Klemme, but lost a 4-5 decision to Lance Maguire of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds. Wrestling back, Tatman earned a9-2 decision win over John Nida of Ogden to finish second and qualify for the state meet.
For the Knights’ other district competitors, the day was a little rocky.
At 215 pounds, Joel McGrauth was pinned in 1:24 by Tyler Christiansen of Belmond Klemme. In the consolation match, McGrauth managed to win a 3-1 overtime decision over Andy Tews of Manson Northwest Webster, but finished third with no wrestleback.
The Knights Kyle Brown, wrestling at 285 pounds, started the day being pinned in 4:54 by Dan Kruger of West Hancock. In the consolation match, Brown managed a 7-4 decision victory over Jack Michalski of Prairie Valley to finish third with no wrestleback.
“The guys all wrestled hard on Saturday,” noted GT Head Coach Cody Alesch. “Joel and Kyle have a lot to feel good about with their seasons. James and Jake have worked hard all year and hopeful it will all come toghether down at state.”
Alesch continued, “the kids have really enjoyed all the tremendous crowds we’ve had all year and especially these last few weeks. We have great wrestling support and the kids and coaches want to thank all the Knight fans for their support.”
