E’Hawks Edged By Spirit Lake
Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks closed their regular season on a down note in a 41-36 loss to Spirit Lake on Friday night. Emmetsburg ends the conference season with an 8-8 mark and 11-9 overall mark going into the tournament series.
After a stinging loss to the Indians earlier this season, the E’Hawks were determined not to repeat that performance. Emmetsburg and Spirit Lake got out to a fairly even start, trading a few buckets in the first quarter, with Spirit Lake taking an 11-8 lead after one quarter. Both defenses would bear down in the second quarter, but Emmetsburg’s interior defense did more damage, allowing the E’Hawks to take a 23-17 lead at the intermission. In the third quarter, the squads traded buckets after Emmetsburg watched its six point lead evaporate to trail 35-34 at the end of the third quarter. In the final stanza, fouls began to hamper the E’Hawks and Spirit Lake was able to edge out off free throws down the stretch to take the 41-36 margin of victory.
For Emmetsburg, Brett Wollum scored 10 points on the night, while Tyler Kliegl and Trevor Dettmann both had eight points. Ryan Wuebker scored seven points with Jack Geelan adding six points.
Ryan Wuebker pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots, while Langston Jones dished out three assists. Jack Geelan, Ryan Wuebker and Tommy Kuecker all had one steal each.
The E’Hawks had seven three-pointers’ on the night, with Brett Wollum, Jack Geelan and Tyler Kliegl all draining two bombs and Ryan Wuebker adding one long ball.
Emmetsburg hit seven of 14 treys for 50 percent shooting, and made nine of 18 shots in the arc for 50 percent on the night, but did not go to the charity stripe once in the game.
Spirit Lake made 13 of 31 shots inside the arc for 42 percent, and just two of 10 three-pointers for 20 percent, and then made nine of 15 free throws for 60 percent shooting.
