Wrestlers Face Challenges
The next stop on the road to the State Wrestling Tournament comes this Saturday with the District Tournaments. The Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted E’Hawks will journey to Cherokee for the 2A District meet, with six wrestlers hoping to advance to next week’s State Tournament.
For the E’Hawks, the District meet will be filled with challenges.
At 119 pounds, Jordan Cody, who was first in his sectional, will meet Nate Taylor of Rock Valley, the runner-up from the Sheldon Sectional.
Joey Brandenburg, the runner-up at 140 pounds, will meet Sheldon Sectional winner Ted Kruger of Sibley-Ocheyedan in the first round on Saturday, and at 145, Matt Stillman, who also finished second in the sectional, will meet Shaun Ludwig, the champion from Sheldon.
At 152 pounds, Joey Naig will wrestle Brandon Ackerman of Sibley-Ocheyedan, the runner-up from Sheldon’s tournament, and at 171, Jake Morris will square off with Thorn Klinker of Sheldon-South O’Brien, the runner up from the sectional.
Finally, at 215, Adam Leuer, who took second at the Emmetsburg sectional, will be matched against Sheldon winner Pete Matthews of Sheldon-South O’Brien in the opening round.
For the Knights of Graettinger/Terril, the 1A District will be at Manson Northwest Webster on Saturday, with four grapplers hoping to earn state berths.
At 103 pounds, James Tatman, the winner at the Laurens-Marathon Sectional, will wrestle Kyle Uhlenhopp of Belmond-Klemme, the runner-up from the Belmond-Klemme Sectional site.
Jake Hoffman, winner at 189, will meet Cody Vegors of Southeast Webster-Grand in the opening round on Saturday, while at 215, Joel McGrauth will meet sectional runner-up Tyler Christensen of Belmond-Klemme.
Rounding out the Knights’ hopes on Saturday will be heavyweight Kyle Brown, who will wrestle runner-up Dan Kruger of West Hancock.
