Lady E’Hawks Fall At Spencer

By Staff | Feb 6, 2008

SPENCER – Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks struggled with shooting as well as the pressure defense of Spencer Tuesday in a 70-22 loss to the Tigers. The loss ends the Lady E’Hawks’ Lakes Conference mark at 1-15.

Emmetsburg found the early going a little rough against Spencer, with the Tigers jumping out to an early lead as the Lady E’Hawks were unable to find the range of the bucket. The Tigers’ defense inside made it tough for Emmetsburg to produce points and at the end of the first quarter, Emmetsburg trailed the Tigers 14-6.

It would be much the same story in the second quarter, as Emmetsburg was able to get shots off, albeit under pressure, and many of the shots missed and were scooped up by the Tigers. At the intermission, Emmetsburg trailed by a 30-14 score as the Lady E’Hawks hit just eight points in the quarter.

Spencer stepped up their pressure in the second half and began to create several turnovers as the Lady E’Hawks struggled to hang on to the ball. On several occasions, Emmetsburg players would have a dribble batted away by the quick Spencer defense and the turnover would be converted to points. That allowed the Tigers to post a 4-18 lead at the end of the third quarter.

There wasn’t much success for the Lady E’Hawks in the final quarter, as they continued to struggle to get shots to fall, and managed to score just four points in the quarter for the win.

Bailee Moore would lead Emmetsburg with seven points, while Kayla Herbers and Tiffany Wollum both added five points. Mollie Smith scored four points and Molly Clasing had one point.

The Lady E’Hawks play their final regular-season game tonight (Thursday) at home as they host Pocahontas Area in a girls’ doubleheader.

Emmetsburg will open the second season on Saturday night, when they play in a Class 2A District Semi-final tournament game against Sioux Central. Game time will be 7 p.m. Saturday evening at the Emmetsburg High School.
