Freshmen Teams Fall To Algona
Emmetsburg’s Freshmen basketball teams dropped contests to Algona in action on Monday, Jan. 28.
In the girls’ contest, the young Lady E’Hawks lost a 36-21 decision to start the evening. Tiffany Wollum would lead Emmetsburg with 10 points in the game, while Chelsey Rouse came away with four points. Morgan Vlasman and Nicole Leuer both added three points and Caitlin Wise scored a free throw.
In the boys’ contest, the young E’Hawks battled back from a 15 point deficit at the end of the first quarter, trailing 18-3, to outscore Algona the rest of the way. Emmetsburg would score 43 points in the second, third and fourth quarters to Algona’s 37, but came up on the wrong side of a 55-46 final tally.
Bobby Gappa would pace Emmetsburg with 12 points, while Cory Schultes followed closely with 11 points. Austin Oppenheimer added eight points, with Tyler Clasing scoring seven markers. Kory Hagen added five points and Arthur Heldt rounded out the effort with four points.
Bobby Gappa and Arthur Heldt both handed out four assists each and joined Cory Schultes in pulling down six rebounds each in the game.
“This was Algona first win by under a double digit margin this season,” noted Freshman Coach Jeff Brennan. “I am really proud of the way the guys battled back from such a large first quarter deficit.”
The loss drops the E’Hawks to a mark of five wins against six losses on the season.
