E’Hawks Slip Past Cherokee In Overtime
CHEROKEE – Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks survived a scare from the Braves of Cherokee on Friday night and held on to earn a one-point, 44-43 victory in overtime at Cherokee. The win improves the E’Hawks to 607 overall on the season and a mark of 4-5 in the Lakes.
Friday’s contest at Cherokee was a defensive battle, with the two teams trading buckets and playing stingy defense. Neither squad could take a definitive advantage, and when regulation play ended in a 38-38 tie, the die was set for a wild overtime period.
Emmetsburg would slip out and away from the Braves in the overtime, but Cherokee was able to get shots to fall and keep close as the extra period wound down. Fouls would come into play as the Braves were able to go to the charity stripe in the extra period and edge closer to the E’Hawks.
But the game came down to a final flurry for the Braves. With Emmetsburg leading 44-42, Cherokee put up a shot, only to have the shot miss. Emmetsburg got the rebound, only to turn the ball over and foul the Braves with a half-second left in the contest.
The first free throw hit the mark, cutting Emmetsburg’s lead to a point, 44-43, at which point a final time out was called to ice the shooter.
The final free throw clanged off the rim and Emmetsburg got the ball as the horn sounded, giving the E’Hawks the narrow escape for the win.
For Emmetsburg, Trevor Dettmann led the effort with 11 points, while Jack Geelan followed with eight points. Langston Jones came up with seven points and Tyler Kliegl added six points. Ryan Wuebker contributed five points to the tally and Brett Wollum would chip in four points while Tommy Kuecker rounded out the effort with three markers.
