E’Hawk Freshmen Fall In First Games Of New Year
Emmetsburg’s Freshmen boys basketball team started the new year with a pair of hard-fought losses in the past week.
On Thursday, Jan. 3, the young E’Hawks fell to Spencer by a 46 to 38 tally. Emmetsburg was led in scoring by Bobby Gappa with 18 points and Arthur Heldt added 10 points. Cory Schultes led the way defensively with seven rebounds, seven assists, and chipped in five points.
Steven Heddinger and Kory Hagen each added two points followed by Austin Oppenheimer with one point.
“The boys played well defensively. The one concern is that Spencer finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds while the E’Hawks only collected three,” noted Freshman Coach Jeff Brennan. “We have to continue to get better at boxing out and rebounding. We are playing well enough to win, but it is difficult to over come all of the second shot opportunities we are giving our opponents.”
On Monday, Jan. 7, the E’Hawk Freshmen hosted Pocahontas Area at Corrigan Hall.
The contest became a marathon affair, going three overtimes before the visiting Indians crept out with a 53-50 win over Emmetsburg.
Cory Schultes played an outstanding offensive game with 22 points and Austin Oppenheimer pitched in 10 points. Arthur Heldt continues to play steady with nine points and five rebounds. Bobby Gappa got into foul trouble but finished the game with five points, five rebounds and dished out four assists. Steven Heddinger and Tyler Clasing both added two points.
“I thought the boys played extremely hard in their first home contest of the year,” Coach Brennan noted.
The E’Hawk Freshmen will return to action on Monday, Jan. 14when they host Bishop Garrigan in a girl-boy doubleheader.
