Lady Wolverines Break Even In Cornbelt Conference Contests

WEST BEND – A pair of Cornbelt Conference games resulted in a win and a narrow loss for the Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard. On Friday, Dec. 14, the Lady Wolverines traveled to Ventura to claim a 48-45 win over the Lady Vikes.

On Tuesday night it was a slightly different story, however, as West Bend-Mallard came up a point shy in a hard-fought, 44-43 loss to Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka. The spilt gives Coach Eugene Ruppert’s Lady Wolverines a mark of 4-5 on the season.

On Friday night at Ventura, West Bend-Mallard jumped out of the blocks quickly, doubling up on the Lady Vikings by an 18-9 tally at the end of the first quarter. Ventura would come back to outscore the Lady Wolverines in the second quarter, 12-7, but West Bend-Mallard held a 26-20 lead at the intermission of the contest.

The second half saw Ventura continue to cut into the Lady Wolverines’ lead, outscoring West Bend-Mallard 13-10 and cutting the margin to a 36-33 lead for the Lady Wolverines to start the final quarter.

But, both teams would settle in during the final quarter and score 12 points each as the Lady Wolverines held on for the 48-45 win.

Kari Zinnel led the scoring with13 points, while Kayla Hartman picked up the double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Marisa Thigles came up with 10 points while Courtney Laubenthal added five points, with Jennica Ruppert and Courtney Streit both chipping in four points. Amanda Frieden rounded out the scoring with one point.

Kari Zinnel and Amanda Frieden both collected six rebounds, while Marisa Thilges had three assists and Courtney Streit dished out two helpers. Kayla Hartman came up with three steals in the win.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Wolverines hosted Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka in a battle that came right down to the wire.

It was an even contest from the outset, as West Bend-Mallard took a one-point, 8-7 lead after the opening quarter of play, but the visiting Tigers came back with a vengeance in the second quarter and slipped out to a seven-point, 23-16 advantage at the half time break.

West Bend-Mallard would regroup during the intermission, and came out battling in the third quarter to cut their deficit to a deuce at 31-29 when the quarter ended. The two teams would hustle and scrap for every loose ball and shot opportunity during the final quarter, but Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka would escape with the one-point, 44-43 win over the Lady Wolverines.

Kayla Hartman would lead West Bend-Mallard on this night with a 12 point game, while Courtney Streit added nine points. Marisa Thilges had seven points, while Courtney Laubenthal and Amanda Frieden both scored six points each. Kari Zinnel closed out the offensive effort with three points for the Lady Wolverines.

Defensively, Amanda Frieden and Kayla Hartman both pulled down eight rebounds, while Kari Zinnel and Marisa Thilges both collected five carroms each.

Kayla Hartman dished out three assists to her teammates and made five steals to round out the defensive effort.
