E’Hawks Fall At Okoboji

By Staff | Dec 18, 2007

MILFORD – After two tough losses in conference play, the Emmetsburg E’Hawks had hoped to be able to step out of the league for a win on Saturday against Okoboji. Such would not be the case, however, as the Pioneers handed the E’Hawks a 51-49 disappointment that dropped Emmetsburg to 3-5 overall on the season.

Torrid shooting by Okoboji would prove to be the difference in Saturday’s contest, as the Pioneers got out to an early jump, putting Emmetsburg down by 10 points at the end of the first quarter, 20-10.

In the second frame, Emmetsburg would battle back as their defense began to take hold, limiting the Okoboji squad to just nine points, but the E’Hawks also battled hard against Okoboji’s defense to score eight points in the quarter. At the intermission, the Pioneers held a 29-18 advantage over Emmetsburg.

Emmetsburg tried to rally in the third quarter, but once again, Okoboji was able to get some three point shots to edge away from the E’Hawks every so often, and held a 44-30 lead at the end of the third quarter. However, the E’Hawks would make another fourth quarter run, much like they had done the night before in Sheldon, where they erased an eight point deficit to contend for the game.

Brett Wollum developed the hot hand for the E’Hawks as he drained several three-pointers to carve away at the Pioneers’ lead. Emmetsburg would get the game to a bucket in the closing stages, and Wollum would tie the game at 49-49 with :26 to go.

Okoboji answered with a bucket with :08 to go, and a foul on the E’Hawks with :02 to play sealed the game’s outcome with two free throws for the 53-49 final.

For the E’Hawks, Brett Wollum would make four three-pointers on his way to scoring 20 points in the losing effort. Trevor Dettmann added 13 points on the night, while Tommy Kuecker had six points. Jack Geelan and Tyler Kliegl both added four points to the coffers and Ryan Wuebker rounded out the scoring with two points.
