Lady E’Hawks Defeat Armstrong-Ringsted

By Staff | Dec 13, 2007

Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks stepped out of the conference Monday evening and hosted Armstrong-Ringsted. The Lady E’Hawks picked up a hard-fought 43-41 victory over the Mustangs. In junior varsity play, the young Lady E’Hawks just played two quarters against AR and came up short in an 17-11 decision.

In the varsity matchup, the Emmetsburg girls struggled in the first quarter to get their offense on track. AR jumped out to a 10-point, 14-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady E’Hawks began hitting their shots in the second quarter, scoring eight points to the Mustang’s nine points to trail 23-12 at the intermission.

The Lady E’Hawks were going to have to shift gears to counter the aggressive AR defense in the second half to make up ground, and that’s what they did.

Tiffany Wollum got Emmetsburg over the hump midway through the quarter with a three pointer that tied the game at 27-27, and then added another long shot later in the quarter to keep the Lady E’Hawks in striking range at the end of the quarter, trailing 31-32.

In the final frame, the Lady E’Hawks continued to battle AR as they made several defensive stops and were able to get the ball inside regularly to edge out to a four-point, 40-36 lead with 1:00 to go in the game.

Armstrong-Ringsted would resort to fouling, putting Wollum on the line to shoot a pair with :43 to go up 41-36. After AR scored a bucket, Bailee Moore was fouled and added a free throw for a 42-36 tally. But after an AR bucket, Wollum was fouled again to get one more bucket and 43-38 lead. AR would get a last-second three-pointer but it was too little too late.

Emmetsburg got 16 points from Kayla Herbers and 12 from Tiff Wollum, while Bailee Moore added 11 points and Mollie Smith had four points.

Kayla Herbers added eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.

In the JV contest, the Lady E’Hawks saw Nicole Leuer score six points, while Chelsey Rouse and Kaitlyn Weisbrod had two points each and Tacee Leebens added a point.

Emmetsburg travels to Sheldon on Friday night.
