Lady Wolverines Defeat TRV
WEST BEND – The Lady Wolverines of West Bend Mallard claimed a 51-48 win over Twin River Valley in Cornbelt Conference girls basketball action Friday night.
Coach Eugene Ruppert’s team took an early basket lead at 11-9 against the Thunder after one quarter of play, but the two teams would trade buckets evenly through the second quarter to play to a 26-26 tie at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, West Bend-Mallard would get a couple of shots up on the Thunder, and managed to work their way back out to a slim, 36-32 lead at the end of the quarter. The game would close out as an exchange of buckets for both teams, but West Bend-Mallard would cling to their narrow advantage to earn the thrilling 51-48 victory.
For West Bend-Mallard, Kayla Hartman would lead the offense on the night with 13 points, while Marisa Thilges and Courtney Streit both scored 11 points in the winning effort. Kari Zinnel added seven points to the coffers, while Courtney Laubenthal had five points and Amanda Frieden scored four points.
Defensively, Kayla Hartman pulled down 12 rebounds to tally the double-double for the Lady Wolverines. Amanda Frieden had nine rebounds and Kari Zinnel pulled down eight boards, with Marisa Thilges coming away with six boards. Kayla Hartman made six steals on the night while Kari Zinnel blocked one shot and dished out four assists, along with Marisa Thilges.
West Bend-Mallard travels to Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne tonight (Tuesday) and then heads to Ventura for Cornbelt Conference action on Friday night.
