E’Hawks Out-Rebound ELC In Win

By Staff | Dec 11, 2007

When you can out-rebound your opponents nearly 2-1, or 31-16, your defense is going a long way in helping you win ballgames. Such was the case for the Emmetsburg E’Hawks on Friday as they defeated Estherville Lincoln Central by a 60-48 margin in Lakes Conference play. The win improves Emmetsburg to 2-1 in Lakes play and 3-2 overall on the season.

After a tough road loss at Storm Lake on Tuesday, the E’Hawks were ready to play on Friday. Emmetsburg set an early tone in the contest that would carry through for them the entire contest.

Emmetsburg hit the boards from the outset, and got shots to drop early as they took an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, the closest that ELC would get in the contest.

The E’Hawks expanded their lead in the second frame, as the defense limited the Midgets to a half-dozen points while at the other end of the court, Emmetsburg was edging out to a 31-18 advantage.

There was no let down in the second half, as Emmetsburg continued to play solid defense and good offense, taking a 41-28 lead to start the final quarter. The Midgets would try to make a run at the E’Hawks in the final quarter, cutting Emmetsburg’s lead down to 10 points midway through the quarter, but the E’Hawks would clamp down on defense once again and took the 60-48 victory.

For the E’Hawks, Jack Geelan sank five three-point field goals to lead the offense with 21 points on the night. Trevor Dettmann picked up the double-double, scoring 15 points and snagging 11 rebounds in the contest.

Brett Wollum added 12 points to the effort, while Ryan Wuebker had six points. Tommy Kuecker chipped in four points and Tyler Kliegl added a bucket for two points.

Brett Wollum dished out eight assists to his teammates, while Trevor Dettmann added two steals and blocked one shot for the E’Hawks in the victorious effort.
