Area Wrestlers Earn State Tournament Berths

MANSON - A total of four wrestlers from Emmetsburg and a duo from Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire will be making the trip to the 2018 Iowa State Wrestling Championships. The six local qualifiers punched their tickets to the big show after Saturday's Class 1A District tournament at Manson.

The 2018 State Tournament gets underway this Thursday, Feb. 15, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Emmetsburg would earn one District Championship on Saturday as Mason Griffin earned the 152 pound title. Teammates Christian Nichols at 120 pounds, along with Spencer Griffin at 138 pounds and Bret Hoyman at 145 pounds, all finished as the runner-up at their respective weights to qualify for the state meet.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven -Ayrshire's Kolton Roth earned the Titans' lone title at 138 pounds, and will be joined by teammate Carter Murray, who finished as the District runner-up at 182 pounds.

West Bend-Mallard/Gil- more City-Bradgate's lone entrant, Mason Studer, would end up in a wrestle back match for second place at 145 pounds, but would be denied and finished third to close out his season.

E-Hawk Results

The Emmetsburg E-Hawks sent eight wrestlers to the District meet on Saturday. Mason Griffin would be the lone champion at 152 pounds, as she started with an 81 decision over Dae Love of Lake Mills, and then earned the title with a 7-2 decision win over Saxon Lyman of Eagle Grove.

At 120 pounds, Christian Nichols opened with a 15-5 Major Decision win over Gabriel Rolon of Eagle Grove, but in the title match, Nichols lost an 8-3 decision to Tyler Helgeson of Lake Mills, but received the second place finish and qualification.

At 138 pounds, Spencer Griffin opened with a3:51 win by fall over Kyle Beery of Lake Mills, but in the title match, he lost a 12-7 decision to Kolton Roth of GT/RA to finish second and earn his trip to state.

Bret Hoyman, wrestling at 145 pounds, opened with a 10-1 Major Decision win over Dalton Subject of West Hancock and in the finals, was pinned in 1:40 by Kam black of Mason City Newman. Hoyman would be forced to wrestle back for second place, facing Mason Studer of West Bend-Mallard/GCB. Hoyman would earn the second place finish with a 5-3 decision victory for his first trip to state.

At 126 pounds, Emmetsburg's Levi Aldous lost a 6-1 decision to Logan Hadberlin of Belmond-Klemme in the first round, but came back to earn a 5-4 decision win over Nathan Thomsen of East Sac County to finish third.

Ethan Berven, wrestling at 132 pounds, opened with a 1:22 win by fall over Mark Dawson of Eagle Grove, but in the finals match, Berven lost a 6-1 decision to Koby Hanson of Manson Northwest Webster. Berven would then have to wrestle back for second, but lost a 6-3 decision to Casey Hanson of Lake Mills to settle for third place.

At 182 pounds, Nick Schany was pinned in 3:35 of his opening round match with Tucker Kroeze of Belmond-Klemme, but Schany would earn a :56 win by fall over Caleb Eckels of West Hancock in the consolation match and earned a wrestleback for second against Carter Murray of GT/RA, would earn an 11-5 decision win over Schany to give the E-Hawk third place.

Rounding out the effort was Jimmie Steffens at 220 pounds, as he lost a 10-0 Major Decision to Joel Mendoza of Eagle Grove and then lost a 10-5 Decision to Max Johnson of Lake Mills to finish fourth.

Titans' Results

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven -Ayrshire also took eight wrestlers to the District meet.

Kolton Roth earned a repeat trip to state at 138 pounds with a 22-6 Technical Fall in 4:`6 over Dawson Lalor of Eagle Grove and then defeated Spencer Griffin of Emmetsburg in a 12-7 decision.

At 182 pounds, Carter Murray opened with a 9-5 decision win over Caleb Eckels of West Hancock, but lost a 12-1 Major Decision to Tucker Kroeze of Belmond-Klemme. In a wrestleback, Murray defeated Nick Schany of Emmetsburg by an 11-5 decision to earn second place ad the trip to state.

At 106, Cade Stearns was pinned in 3:00 by Jack Ramaker of Lake Mills to start the day, and then was pinned in 3:23 by Ryan Duckett of St. Edmonds to finish fourth.

At 113 pounds, Monte Matthews opened with a 7-6 decision over Derek Graham of Eagle Grove, but was pinned in the finals match in 5:17 by Caiden Jones of Lake Mills. Matthews would wrestle back but lost an 11-2 Major Decision to Daltin Roest of Manson Northwest Webster to finish third.

Brock Grimm, wrestling at 120 pounds, lost a 10-2 Major Decision to Tyler Helgeseon of Lake Mills and finished fourth after losing a 9-2 decision to Gabriel Rolon of Eagle Grove.

At 160 pounds, Nate Larson lost a 3-1 decision to Elijah Wagner of Lake Mills, and finished third after earning a 5-3 decision win over Austin Burger of Manson Northwest Webster.

Treyton Cacek, wrestling at 170 pounds, lost a 3-1 decision to Brayden Lyman of Eagle Grove, but won third place with a 15-0 Technical Fall in 4:00 over Alex DeRoos of Alta-Aurelia.

At 195 pounds, Blake Miller was pinned in 1:11 by Hunter Hagen of West Hancock and then went on to finish third in his match with Austin Corbin of East Sac County after Corbin was disqualified during the match.

Wolverine Results

West Bend-Mallard/Gil- more City-Bradgate would send just one wrestlers to the District on Saturday as Mason Studer wrestled at 145 pounds.

In his opening round match, Studer would be pinned in 2:38 by Kam Black of Mason City Newman Catholic, but in the consolation match, Studer earned an 8-4 decision victory over Dalton Subject of West Hancock. The win would earn Studer a wrestleback opportunity for second place against Bret Hoyman of Emmetsburg, but Studer would come up short in a 5-3 decision to the E-Hawk wrestler to end up finishing third for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City -Bradgate.
