Couple Expands Family Business With Purchase Of Local Grocery

July 3, 2014
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

It's often said that when a person works in a trade or business for a period of time, that trade or business "gets in their blood." For Tim and Jodi Dittes of Appleton, Minnesota, the grocery business has led them to purchase the four Food Pride grocery stores owned by the Joersz family, including the Emmetsburg Food Pride store.

"We officially took over ownership on June 1," Tim said. "We were looking to expand by buying another store, but we ended up with all four stores in the end."

In the purchase, the Dittes' acquired not only the Emmetsburg location of Food Pride, but the Food Pride stores in Laurens, Sac City and Ida Grove as well. "That makes for a little traveling from Appleton," Tim quipped.

Tim traces his involvement in the grocery business back to 1977, when be began helping his father in the grocery business. Jodi got into the business in 1992, and the couple has carried on in the grocery business ever since.

"We own a Food Pride store in Appleton," Tim noted, "so adding these stores has been very easy to adapt into. The product lines are all the same, we just have to deal with different warehouses."

The couple has a daughter and three grandsons, Keegan, Mason and Jax, which keep them busy in their time away from the stores.

In taking over the local Food Pride operation, Tim is impressed so far with the community in his first month here.

"Emmetsburg is a nice, clean town," Tim noted. "I've been able to meet some people so far and they've been very welcoming."

For customers who enter the Food Pride store in Emmetsburg, the change in ownership hasn't been all that noticeable, but some changes are forthcoming.

"One thing we are going to be doing is put a weekly ad back in the local newspaper, to go along with our flyer," Tim said. "We want the Emmetsburg Food Pride store to be your home-town, full-service grocery store that's here for you seven days a week. We have the full service deli, the full service meat counter and we'll be happy to help you with special orders, meat and cheese trays, fruit and veggie trays, any kind of special order you might need."

While the first month of ownership has gone by quickly, both Tim and Jodi are excited about the new chapter in their lives, and are looking forward to continue growing with the community.

"We plan on having a Grand Opening a little later in the Summer so that we can meet more folks in the community," Tim said. "For now, we're looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you as your home town grocery store."
