The post season came to a close Saturday night for the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Wolverines boys basketball team in a heartbreaking, 76-74 loss to Alta-Aurelia in Class 1A District Semi-final action at Alta. The loss closes out the Wolverines' season on the court with a mark of 13-9.
Saturday night's contest saw the host Warriors of Alta-Aurelia jump out to 24-14 lead over the Wolverines at the end of the first quarter, but in the second frame, the two teams matched bucket for bucket for 13 points each, but West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City Bradgate trailed by 10 points, 37-27, at the intermission.
In the second half, the show was on the other foot as the Wolverines came out gunning in the third quarter and outscored the Warriors 24-17 to cut the deficit to 54-51 to start the final quarter. The fourth quarter of play saw both teams match bucket for bucket to tie the score at 69-69 to force an overtime period.
But in the overtime, the defenses came into play, but it was the Warriors who made a final stop to take the 76-74 win over the Wolverines.
For the Wolverines, Jason Zinnel led the effort with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds on the night and was followed by Jesse Zinnel's 23 point effort. Cole Banwart and Jordan Buhs would both score eight points each, while Jack Banwart chipped in four points. Nolan (Whitty) Dahlhauser and Brady Jenson both scored three points each in the effort.
