WEST?BEND - The Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate closed out their regular season last Friday night with a 76-68 win over Laurens-Marathon that gives the Wolverines a 13-8 mark on the year with a 6-4 Cornbelt Conference mark.
The first quarter of the game would see WBM/GCB?match the Chargers of Laurens-Marathon shot for shot to start, but the Wolverines edged out to take an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter of action.
Good defense by the Wolverines would hold the Chargers to nine points in the second quarter of play, as the Wolverines took a 37-21 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Laurens-Marathon would come out of the break with renewed spirit, as they would turn the tables on WBM/GCB and outscored the purple and gold 15-11, cutting the deficit to 48-36 to start the final quarter.
But, the Wolverines would hold steady in the final eight minutes, despite being outscored 32-28 by the Chargers, to escape with the 76-68 win.
For the Wolverines, Jason Zinnel would lead the offensive effort with 26 points, while Cole Banwart tallied 19 points in the winning effort. Jordan Buhs added 11 points and Jesse Zinnel came away with 10 points for the Wolverines.
Brady Jenson would score six points, while Nolan (Whitty) Dahlhauser and Jack Banwart both added two points each.
