He and a business partner founded a lumber and construction company in Plover. In 1966, he and Mary Ellen adopted an infant son, Kevin. They went on to purchase and operate the Mallard Lumber Company where they were in the construction and lumber business for over 40 years. During this time they also purchased and managed the family farm.

Denny served on a number of boards including two terms on the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors; the Multipurpose Senior Center, Corn and Soybean Association, and Northwest Iowa Agency on Aging boards.

He was a township trustee, and Denny was very active in St. Mary's Parish in Mallard where he was a member of the council, parish director, lector and extra-ordinary Eucharistic minister for many years. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and long time Commander of the Anderson-Eckert-Hersom Post #345 of the American Legion in Mallard.

On Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, Denny passed away at his home in Mallard at the age of 84.
