E-Hawks Finish Second In Class 1A

Earn Six Medal Finishes

DES?MOINES - The wrestling season came to a close Friday night with Emmetsburg's E-Hawks earning a second-place finish in Class 1A at the 2013 Iowa High School Wrestling Championships. Coach Jared Pickett's wrestlers brought home six medals from the state tournament, capping off a full week of action that saw Emmetsburg finish sixth in the State Dual Tournament on Wednesday.

"These guys all wrestled very well and represented our community to the fullest,"?noted Coach Pickett. "I'm very proud of how hard they've worked and what they've accomplished."

For the E-Hawks, seniors Nick Schany and Austin McCartan would both finish as runners-up in Class 1A, while Andrew Wellik would earn third place honors.

Tayler Wegner would finish sixth, while Brady Bailey finished in seventh place and Tyler Leuer earned eighth place to round out the Emmetsburg placings.

Thursday's Action

The E-Hawks opened the state tournament on Thursday morning and quickly went to work.

Jake Miller would open the tournament facing Jeren Glosser of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and would end up being pinned in 1:25 to fall into the consolation brackets.

At 132 pounds, Tyler Leuer would come up short in a 9-4 decision loss to Connor Shulista of Alburnett in his first round match to also drop into the consolation bracket.

Brady Bailey would lose his opening round match to Logan Moore of West Monona-Onawa by a 6-0 decision to also drop into the consolation rounds.

But at 170 pounds, the tide turned for the E-Hawks. Nick Schany stepped on the mat against Cole Streigle of Sigourney-Keota and earned a 4:28 win by fall to adance into the quarter-finals Friday morning.

Teammate Andrew Wellik would also get off to a good start, as he would pin Seth Kerr of English Valleys-North English in 1:34 to advance to the quarterfinal round at 182 pounds.

At 195 pounds, Austin McCartan needed just :34 to pin Luke Kramer of Maquoketa Valley-Delhi in the opening round to earn his advancement to the quarterfinals.

The final push came from Tayler Wegner at 220 pounds as he earned a 3:11 win by fall over Kevin Tlach of West Hancock to close out the first round.

Immediately, the wrestlebacks to stay alive in the bracket began.

At 120, Jake Miller was paired off with Jordan Henderson of Alburnett, who scored a 1:26 pin over Miller to end the E-Hawk's state tournament appearance.

Tyler Leuer would meet Reed Lette of Belmond-Klemme in his wrestleback at 132 and came up with a 7-2 decision victory to stay alive in the tournament.

Finally, Brady Bailey would win a 9-6 decision over Ala Hayes of Starmont to keep his state tournament hopes alive, ending Emmetsburg's first day of action.

Quarterfinal Round

Friday morning brought about quarterfinal matches for the E-Hawk quartet, and Nick Schany got the day started with a 4-3 decision win iover Devin Chesler of West Marshall in action at 170. At 182, Andrew Wellik earned a 7-6 decision over Jake Lewis of Council Bluffs St. Alberts to advance to the semifinal round.

At 195 pounds, Austin McCartan would claim a 12-5 Major decision over Nathan Aitchison of West Hancock for his advancement to the semi's and at 200 pounds, Tayler Wegner claimed a 7-4 decision ver Levi Paulsen of Woodbury Central for his semi-final berth.

Moving into the second-round consolation matches, Tyler Leuer kept his medal hopes alive with a 10-2 Major decision win over Zach Bruns of North Fayette at 132 pounds.

Brady Bailey also kept his state tournament appearance alive with a 9-2 decision win over Austyn Vogel of Pekin in their 152 pound match.

Semi-Final Round

After the morning session, Emmetsburg's wrestlers would return to Wells Fargo Arena in the afternoon on Friday to compete in the semi-finals for the prize of a finals berth on Saturday night.

Nick Schany started the action for the E-Hawks by meeting Luke Huber of Hudson. Schany was on a mission as he dominated the match to a take a 19-10 Major decision and earn the right to advance to the 170 pound title match Saturday night.

At 182 pounds, Andrew Wellik squared off against Dalton Ciavarelli of Clarksville, who gave Wellik his first loss of the season in a 3-2 decision loss that knocked the E-Hawk senior out of the hunt for a championship.

Austin McCartan would meet Trey Sander of Elk Horn-Kimballton-Exira in the semi-finals, and claimed a 13-5 Major decision to set up his chance for a state Championship Saturday night at 195 pounds.

But at 220, Tayler Wegner saw his title hopes dashed when he came up short in a 7-5 decision loss to Ryley Howell of Wapello.

In the third round consolations, Tyler Leuer met Kyle Pegorick of Midland Wyoming and lost a 3-2 heartbreaker that put Leuer in the 132 pound seventh place consolation bracket for Saturday's Consolation Finals.

Brady Bailey would meet Grant Henderson of Alburnett in his match at 152 and lost a 10-1 Major decision to go to the seventh place consolation match on Saturday, ending Friday's action for the E-Hawks.

Consolation Finals

For two E-Hawks, Saturday started out with placement matches in the consolation bracket to determine what place they would wrestle for.

Andrew Wellik would wrestle Dillon Nelson of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds and scored a 1:13 win by fall to put the E-Hawk wrestler in the third place Consolation Championship match.

Meeting Gunnar Clark of West Hancock in the finals, Wellik would earn the third place title at 182 pounds with a 7-1 decision to close out his prep career.

At 220 pounds, Tayler Wegner wrestled Vinnie Harvey of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds in his placement match, but lost a 10-0 Major decision to Harvey to drop into the Fifth place match.

Wrestling for fifth, Wegner met a familiar foe, Michael Davidson of Ridge View, but this time, Davidson earned a 4-3 decision over Wegner to give the E-Hawk the sixth place finish for his prep career.

Wrestling for seventh place at 132 pounds, Tyler Leuer would meet Logan Mays of Wilton, but lost a 13-3 Major decision to finish in eighth place for Emmetsburg.

At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey wrestled Blake Pruisener of Aplington-Parkersburg in the seventh place match and earned the finish with a 2-0 decision to cap off a solid season.

The Big Dance

Saturday night's finals were the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice for Nick Schany and Austin McCartan, as they took the center mat at Wells Fargo for their respective Class 1A Championship matches.

In the 170 pound match, Schany wrestled Brendan Schott of North Linn. The two wrestlers would battle evenly through the match, but Schott would come away with the narrow 3-2 decision victory, ending Schany's campaign with a mark of 32-7.

At 195 pounds, Austin McCartan would score a pair of takedowns and held a 4-3 lead with :14 to go in the title match with Cade Jones of West Branch, but Jones managed to hook McCartan's knee and got a late takedown to dash the E-Hawk's title hops with a 5-4 decision loss, ending McCartan's senior season with a mark of 40-1.
