The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire fell in a doubleheader with Laurens-Marathon on the hardwood last Thursday night. In the girls contest, the Chargers avenged an early-season loss with a 51-37 victory over GT/RA while in the boys contest, LM earned a 62-44 win.
After trailing 18-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Titan girls were able to cut that deficit to a handful at 23-16 midway through the second frame, but five quick LM points gave the Chargers a 28-16 lead at intermission.
It remained tough to get the ball in the hoop for the Titans in the second half, as Laurens-Marathon edged out to a 20-point, 42-22 lead after three periods and went on to take the 51-37 final.
GT/RA was led by Marly Bakken's 11 points while Brooke Hoffman finished with 10, Grace Skattebo added six points and Morgan McGrauth scored five points, while Lauren Flaharty and Alex Olesen each had two points.
In the boys game, one bad quarter was the difference in the 61-44 loss to the Chargers.
GT/RA played right with the Chargers in the first frame to trail 8-7 to start the second quarter, but a 12-0 outburst by LM would leave the Titans trailing by a 25-14 score at half time.
The Titans came back in the third quarter to start climbing back into the game only to see LM ease away to a 40-27 margin at the end of the third. GT/RA simply could not erase the gap in the final frame for the 61-44 final.
Connor Sturgill led the effort with 17 points, while Austin Dyer had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Hagedorn added eight points. Marcus Girres scored five points and Andy Geelan chipped in three points.
