WEST?BEND - The Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard moved one step closer to the 2012 State Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Laurens-Marathon on Friday, Oct. 26 in a Class 1A Regional semi-final. By virtue of the win, West Bend-Mallard advances to the Regional Final game on Wednesday night, Oct. 31, at Eagle Grove High School, where they will face Janesville for the right to advance to the state volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids, Nov. 7-10.
in Wednesday's semi-final at West Bend, the Lady Wolverines won by game scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-23.
The Lady Wolverines would take an early 3-0 lead in the opening game and battled back from an 8-8 tie to jump out to a 5-1 run for a 16-11 lead, and then went on to claim the first set victory by the 25-16 margin.
But the second contest would be more of a battle for the Lady Wolverines, as the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie before West Bend-Mallard went on a five-point run. But Laurens-Marathon would answer with a 9-2 run to take a 19-17 advantage over the Lady Wolverines before the game was tied up at 19-19.
The visiting Chargers would take a 23-20 lead over WBM, but a strategic time out allowed the Lady Wolverines to steal the momentum away from the Chargers with a 5-0 run to earn the game two 25-23 victory.
The third game would be a true back and forth battle, with the two teams trading the lead back and forth until the score was tied at 15-15. West Bend-Mallard erupted for a 7-1 scoring spurt to edge away from Laurens-Marathon for a 22-16 lead.
Laurens-Marathon would battle back to make the score 24-23, trailing by a point, but a hit into the net ended the contest and gave the Lady Wolverines the advancement to the Regional Final.
The Lady Wolverines were led by Ashley Schmidts, 24 of 31 hits with 11 kills, along with seven digs and 13 of 17 serves with four aces.
Heather Fehr chipped in 18 of 22 hits with nine kills, along with a pair of digs, two assisted blocks and 12 of 14 completed serves with one ace.
McKenzie Grimm would added 11 of 22 hits with seven kills, along with nine digs, four assisted blocks and two solo blocks, while making 11 of her 12 serves with one ace.
Sam Hartman would make nine of 16 hits with five kills, and handed out three assists, along with digging out one shot and making one solo block on the night.
Emily Bormann connected on 12 of 13 hits with four kills and assisted on a pair of blocks and made two solo stops at the net.
Courtney Bargman made five of five hits with one kill and dished out 32 assists to her teammates, while digging out three shots, assisting on four blocks and making two solo blocks, as well as connecting on 11 of 12 serves with a pair of aces.
Kayla Banwart came away with one hit and dug out 14 shots on the night, while connecting on all 13 of her service attempts and scoring one ace.
Jennalyn Thul added 12 digs on the night and made five of six serves for the Lady Wolverines.
