Know Where the Candidates Stand

By Staff | Oct 29, 2020

To the editor:

Our community, our state, and farmers across Iowa realized the importance of finding new ways to add value to our corps. It is part of what led to the development of the biofuels industry in our state, creating jobs in Emmetsburg and all over Iowa, and improving farm income. In the state senate, I was proud to work with Democrats and Republicans to promote and grow ethanol and biodiesel production in Iowa. Corn ethanol opened the door to cellulosic ethanol, taking what once was considered waste, and turning it into fuel, and Emmetsburg was at the forefront of this effort.

But with the devastating news that POET will not reopen its cellulosic ethanol plant, it’s important to know where the candidates stand on issues that impact Emmetsburg and our local economy. Despite saying he would be a friend to ethanol, Donald Trump has taken the side of big oil companies time after time. His decisions to allow oil refineries to back out of the requirements of the Renewable Fuel Standard has destroyed demand for more than four billion gallons of biofuel, and cost jobs in rural Iowa, including right here in Palo Alto County.

A company spokesman for POET said that Trump siding with oil companies contributed to the plant’s closure.

I’ve talked to Joe Biden. He understands the importance of the RFS to places like Emmetsburg where the ag economy supports so many businesses. He has a plan to grow the markets for biofuels, supporting existing corn ethanol, while also building out the advanced biofuels that will help us clean up our fuel supply and create jobs in towns across the country. I hope you’ll join me in voting for Joe Biden for President.
