A Twenty-One Gun Salute?

By Staff | Aug 3, 2018

To The Editor:

In military terms, a “gun” is a heavy caliber weapon such as a field artillery or Navy ship cannon. “Twenty-one gun salutes are officially for presidents, dignitaries, and visiting heads of state. Locally, when there are military rites at the funeral of a veteran, VFW members fire a “rifle volley” as a salute to a fallen comrade.

These are sometimes mistakenly refered to as twenty-one gun salutes.
