It’s Time For Fair Fare
One of the best parts of going to a fair is the food — fair fare! It doesn’t matter what fair you attend, there is always something tasty.
Why does a hamburger taste so much better at the fair? At least once during our Palo Alto County Fair, be sure to stop by the food booth and get a burger with all the trimmings. Top it off with a piece of homemade pie. You can’t get much better than that — unless it’s one of the barbecue nights at the county fair.
The larger the fair, the more food options there are. The Clay County Fair has Tom Thumb Donuts and candied pecans — which are among my favorites. There is a stand or two that make excellent corn dogs, too. And the local food booths are excellent. How much walking does it take to walk off all the calories from eating ice cream treats and lemonade?
A news release from the Iowa State Fair announced the 2016 new food stands:

Three new fair foods will be competing for the coveted 2016 Iowa State Fair People’s Choice Best New Food. Fairgoers can sample the top three finalists and cast their vote Aug. 11- 15. The 2016 New Fair Food winner will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
The 2016 Iowa State Fair People’s Choice Best New Food finalists are:
Ice Cream Nachos: Crisp cinnamon sugar chips covered with two scoops of cinnamon ice cream drizzled with hot fudge and caramel and sprinkled with bits of chocolate, caramel and strawberries. The dish is topped with nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry. This delicious treat will help you to beat the heat this Fair, and can be found at Benoit’s Nutty Bar and Root Beer Floats on Rock Island Avenue, east of the Anne and Bill Riley Stage.
The Not Your Mamma’s Taco starts with a golden crispy deep fried flour tortilla. A layer of tender shredded and perfectly seasoned turkey is added to anchor the tortilla. Then fresh homemade veggie slaw is added to give the taco a creamy crunch. The taco is then topped with a sweet mango salsa to add color and a spicy sweet finish. The mouth watering taco can be found at the Iowa Turkey Federation Stand west of the Anne and Bill Riley Stage.
The Pride of Iowa Wrap boasts a jalapeno cheddar tortilla with pork shoulder, sweet corn salsa, and hickory smoked bacon bits. Layered with cheddar jack cheese, fresh avocado relish, chipotle aioli and crispy tortilla bites for added texture, this wrap is sure to be a hit and is located southeast of the Varied Industries Building at the G. Migs stand.
These new items sound appealing, but they have nothing over the Palo Alto County Cattlemen. Their ribeye sandwich is absolutely the best.
