When Tax Time Makes You Smile
It’s time to start thinking about filing income tax returns. This is a pleasant thought for those expecting a refund; not so pleasant for those who have to pay in.
There are two tax time options that could put a smile on your face – by virtue of their names alone:
The Corndog Checkoff (State Fair)
The Chickadee Checkoff (Fish/Wildlife)
The Corndog Checkoff is an opportunity for those who love the Iowa State Fair to contribute to the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s efforts to renovate and preserve the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
Every dollar donated is directly allocated to capital improvements (Youth Inn, Ruan Plaza, campgrounds, parking areas, sidewalks and restrooms). The Corndog Checkoff has raised more than $1.9 million that has supplemented renovation projects.
The Chickadee Checkoff is a way to provide funding to aid all wildlife in Iowa, but especially nongame species.
Donations support staff in the Wildlife Diversity Program, restoration of previously lost Iowa wildlife; Educational wildlife appreciation events; designation of Bird Conservation Areas; research projects; population monitoring; acquisition of lands for public use; and, technical guidance provided on land management for wildlife species, plus more. Iowans donated $132.000 last spring when completing their tax forms.
Check off one dollar or more to either of these funds on line 57 of Iowa Tax Form 1040. Donations are either deducted from your refund, or added to the amount due. Donations are tax deductible on the following years tax form just like any other charitable giving.
Give it a thought and smile when you complete your taxes this year.
