Let’s Talk RAGBRAI
Emmetsburg is an overnight stop for RAGBRAI?this summer. What a great opportunity for us to show off our community.
We’ve been down this path before — a couple of times — so we know the ropes. We roll out the Welcome mat and show everyone a good time with great food, good entertainment and a big heap of hospitality.
Emmetsburg has sent a bus load of bicycle riders on RAGBRAI each year for a long time. Greg and Steve Hoyman have been the most recent organizers of this annual venture. Greg has some words of wisdom to share with Emmetsburg residents and to those who are going to ride all or part of the RAGBRAI route:
DEAR RESIDENTS OF EMMETSBURG,
BE AWARE, there will be a lot of people and groups (bikers and support people) wanting housing and things during RAGBRAI’s stay in Emmetsburg.. There is a process by which the public can get passes for a day or more or the whole week. Please understand that those fees make this all happen. Those fees go to:
1. Organize the ride.
2. Provide official RAGBRAI wristbands.
3. Plan the route.
4. Work with the communities.
5. Arrange for the overnight and pass-thru towns.
6. Provide for portable toilets and hand washing stations in the overnight towns campgrounds.
7. Cover the administrative expenses.
8. Provides emergency medical services on the rider route.
9. Provide free SAG wagon service on the designated route.
10. Works with the Iowa State Patrol, county sheriffs, the Iowa Department of Transportation and county engineers.
11. Provide two baggage semi-trucks to carry rider baggage.
12. Give each rider an official RAGBRAI patch.
13. Provide money to go back to the host towns.
People that do not get passes threaten the strength of the ride and take money away from the host towns. We have no obligation to provide those bandits anything.
PLEASE ASK IF PEOPLE WILL BE REGISTERED RIDERS WHEN YOU ARE ASKED FOR HOUSING, USE OF YARD, ETC. AND DON’T HELP THOSE THAT ARE NOT REGISTERED.
(Long time rider and always registered)
No doubt, there are many who have already received calls from riders asking for yard space and/or use of shower facilities. Perhaps some of them were guests at Emmetsburg homes from past rides. It will be great to renew friendships.
On past RAGBRAI visits, we’ve had a great deal of fun.
Who can forget Emmetsburg Courthouse Square filled to capacity with riders and bicycles and people getting their picture taken with the Robert Emmet statue and Blarney Stone?
Who can forget one-on-one basketball in Soper Park when organizers of this great bike ride took on the locals?
Who can forget the contests to come up with an Emmetsburg RAGBRAI logo?
Who can forget all the children decorating appliance boxes that then served as trash receptacles?
Who can forget the year the river ran out of its banks, threatening the RAGBRAI route?
Who can forget the RAGBRAI?riders who got married during their overnight stay in Emmetsburg?
Who can forget the late night planning sessions and all the last minute details to make Emmetsburg a memorable overnight stop on RAGBRAI?
We’ll be making new memories in the summer of 2014. It will take all of us to do the job. Hope you will volunteer to be a part of the group.
