Planning For ‘Relay 2013’
The Palo Alto County Relay for Life Committee members meet on Aug. 26 at the Pizza Ranch to discuss plans for 2013 Relay for Life event and fundraising.
Last meeting we decided to change to a Friday Relay instead of the Saturday plan we have done for the past several years. This year’s Relay we take place Friday, June 21st from Noon to 10 p.m. at Court House Square. Mark your calendars! Lunch and Supper specials will be served and there will be events similar to past years such as live music and games.
At the last meeting it was also decided that sand would no longer be used to fill the bottoms of the luminary bags. Instead a small block of wood will be used for weight in the bag and as a candleholder. Other counties have had success with this in the past. Local businesses and builders were consulted for costs, but Thad Louwagie at the Building Center said they would be willing to make these from scrap wood and donated to the committee. They will work over the winter months to make 400 blocks of wood.
We need a volunteer to be in charge of the luminary bags this year. Sherri Freeman has stepped down from her luminary duties. Luminary bags will now be available for team’s to pick up at Palo Alto County Hospital’s registration desk and at Creative Stitches.
Pizza Ranch has offered to give us a “tip night” as they have done with other fundraising groups in the past. Committee and Team members will bus tables, carryout pizzas, refill pops, etc. October 23rd will be the date for this event. 20% of all sales between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will go to Relay. Information on Relay will also be available to the public. A special meeting to plan this event will be held September 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the Pizza Ranch. This event will be part of our Kick-off for this year’s Relay.
The other aspect of the Kick-off will be a Pink-out Event, which was also discussed at the meeting. We thought about doing a football and/or a volleyball game, but decided we should get even more people involved. It was decided that we should declare the same day as our tip night as a pink out day for the entire county. Businesses and schools will be encouraged to submit pictures of their participation for the Facebook page.
We would like to do a Purple-out in the spring for survivor’s recognition. It will be discussed further after the Pink-out.
Another fundraiser we are considering would be the Pizza Ranch “Take & Bake” program. Relay Team members would take orders and then get together on a Saturday morning to make the pizzas, starting at about 7 am. We need to be done by 11 am. Individuals that order are responsible for picking them up or making delivery arrangements. It may be something that could be done in the fall and again in the spring. It will be discussed further at the next meeting.
We are still looking for a way to get children more involved with Relay. In other counties schools have had luck with a weeklong programs including Relay Recess, assembly kickoffs and closing ceremonies. Ideas are welcome.
