Rose A. Herke
Private family Mass of Christian Burial for Rose Herke of Graettinger was held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger. The Rev. Bill Schreiber was the celebrant.
Inurnment was at Valley View Cemetery, Graettinger. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Rose A. Herke, daughter of James and Salome (Antoine) Currans, was born Aug. 26, 1938, in Emmetsburg. She received her education at Emmetsburg Catholic School, graduating in 1957. Rose continued her education at Briar Cliff College where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1961.
On Aug. 28, 1961 Rose was united in marriage to Richard Herke at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger. They were blessed with four daughters.
Rose and Richard made their home and farmed near Graettinger. Rose taught school in Graettinger for several years and then did substitute teaching in Graettinger, Emmetsburg and Ruthven. Rose also was a Mary Kay consultant for many years.
She was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and church circle, serving as chairman. She was also a member of the Rosary Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Rose enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Hillcrest County Club and played on Ladies League. She was active in the Red Hat Society.
Rose loved learning and was an avid reader and was proud of her CB handle, Shakespeare. She was an excellent cook and loved hosting family and friends for various events. Rose always made sure there was something chocolate to enjoy. She had beautiful flower gardens in the summers and made gorgeous quilts for family and friends. Rose loved shopping for clothes and was always dressed to perfection.
Rose and Richard spent several winters in Texas where they enjoyed participating in all kinds of activities. Rose’s family was very important to her, especially spending time with her grandchildren who she thoroughly loved to spoil.
Rose passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jim Currans; sisters-in-law, Joan Herke, Alice Kathman, Esther Anderson and Arlene Henkelvig; brother-in-law, Don Brown; nieces, Connie Herke and Myra Currans Partridge.
She is survived by her husband, Richard of Graettinger; daughters, Barb Herke-Smith (Roger) of Maple Grove, MN, Kathy Herke of Sacramento, CA, Marsha Herke of Edina, MN, and Angie Herke-Juhl (Steve) of Shakopee, MN; three grandchildren, Patrick Smith, Morgan Smith and Caden Juhl; brothers and sisters, Paul Currans (Sheila) of Spencer, Emmett Currans (Sandy) of Emmetsburg, Father Clem Currans of Emmetsburg, Phillip Currans (Linda) of Ruthven, Marty Currans (Barb) of Graettinger, Mary Brown of Arizona, Nancy Hamilton (Pete) of Waukee, and Tricia Currans-Sheehan (Bob) of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Willard Herke of Graettinger; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Currans of Lakewood, CO and Wilma Refsell of Estherville; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
