Richard Eugene Naig, son of Elmer and Vera (Lawrence) Naig, of Emmetsburg, was born on July 3, 1934, in rural Cylinder. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Depew and is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. He attended country school in rural Cylinder through the eighth grade. He earned his GED at age 60.
Richard was united in marriage to Marilyn Hanson on Nov. 18, 1956. They farmed for 39 years and Richard also did carpentry work. They moved to Emmetsburg in 1993 where he worked for the City of Emmetsburg, at Lakeside Lutheran Home, and the Emmetsburg Airport.
Richard lived his life in a way that showed strong faith. He was a hard-working man, with strength, integrity, and love, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren, enjoying their activities and attending every event he could, often giving a little advice on the performance. After moving to town from the farm, he developed a love for golf, a game he had previously considered ‘silly to follow a little white ball around’.
Richard went to his heavenly home on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marilyn, daughters, Melanie (Brian) Post of Lakefield, MN; Jana Mathisen of Emmetsburg; Kathie (Stewart) Ohrtman of Ringsted; Sue (Mike) Hennagir of Mason City; Richelle (Jeff) Anderson of Ringsted; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; brother, Gaylord (Janice) Naig of Emmetsburg; sisters, Marcella Smith of Emmetsburg, Grace Fanning of Illinois; sisters-in-law Alice Naig of Emmetsburg, Marilyn Naig of Armstrong and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding him in death are his parents; son-in-law, Todd Mathisen; sisters, Josephine Juhl, and Marie Evenson; brothers Charley Naig, Leroy Naig, and Robert Naig; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
