Ilene Margaret Drown, daughter of Perry and Thresa (Walsh) Hansen, was born May 24, 1932 in Terril. She received her education in Terril, graduating from Terril High School in 1950. During her school years, Ilene’s favorite sport was basketball. Ilene then attended Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis and later Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.
Ilene, along with another couple from West Bend, built the Clear View Manor where she was employed as their licensed nursing home administrator from 1972 until 1979. She then did the bookkeeping for the West Bend Care Center and later at the West Bend International/Case I.H. dealership until June 1996.
Ilene was a faithful member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas in West Bend. She was also a member of TOPS and Drama Club and served as the State Delegate for the Democratic National Convention.
Ilene was a huge promoter of the Grotto of Redemption in West Bend, where she began giving tours in August 1996. She took a class to learn about rock classifications so that she could share this information with the groups she led. She spent many hours researching the history of the Grotto. Ilene also loved sewing and quilting and had made many quilts that she shared with her family and friends. She was a stamp collector since her childhood and she enjoyed watching basketball, no matter which team was playing, but the Hawkeyes were her favorite. Ilene loved to travel and this stemmed from her childhood.
Ilene passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2019 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Thresa Hansen; and a sister, Betty Newman.
She is survived by her children, Mary and Greg Moser of Emmetsburg, Jane Curl of Des Moines, Jim Drown of Emmetsburg, and Tom and Tammie Drown of George; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ann Beck of Story City; as well as many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Horizons Unlimited or the Grotto of the Redemption.
