Thomas J. Vaughan

A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas Vaughan was held on Saturday, March 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Father Clem Currans officiated.

Interment was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Joseph Vaughan, son of Stephen and Mary (Flynn) Vaughan, was born July 25, 1928, at the old Emmetsburg Hospital. He attended country school in Nevada Township near Mallard.

On Nov. 21, 1950, Tom was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. During his service, Tom was awarded several medals, including one Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 22, 1952.

After returning from service, Tom continued his farming career in Palo Alto County. Tom was a grain farmer and also raised livestock. He received the Master Pork Producer Award from the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Tom loved farming, especially when his grandkids were out with him and he liked checking on his pigs at “Pig Town”.

On June 25, 1960, Tom was united in marriage to Frances Dreher at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union eight children were born. Tom and Frances raised their family on their farm near Mallard.

Tom was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard and Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Tom was also a devoted member of the V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg, serving as past Commander for several terms. He was a member of the American Legion in Mallard and the Havelock AmVets.

Tom loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed visiting with his Army buddies, playing cards, watching the Military History Channel and FOX News. He was an avid reader and enjoyed having a cold Budweiser with family and friends.

Tom passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mildred and Joseph Dreher; a daughter, Mary Therese; a daughter-in-law, Sherry; brothers, Pat and Johnny; brothers-in-law, Dennis Schumacher, Richard Dreher and Joe Mielke; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Dreher.

He is survived by his wife, Fran of Mallard; his children, Janet (Terry) Schilmoeller of Centennial, Colorado, Jim (Angie) Vaughan of Mallard, Dave (Katy) Vaughan of Austin, MN, Kathy (Jeff) Mortenson of Mallard, Mike Vaughan of Mallard, Steve (Terry) Vaughan of Omaha, NE, and Linda (Nick) Steinkamp of Emmetsburg; grandchildren, Ryan, Nicole (Seth), Shay, Casey (Emily), Hollie (Josh), Jake, Stephanie, Brett, Taylor, Paige, Erin, Katie, Amber and Abby; great grandchildren, Autumn, Payson, Andersyn and a baby girl due in May; sister, Mary Ellen Schumacher; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Vonita Vaughan, Joanne Mielke, Jim and Cathe Dreher, Bob and Judy Dreher, Bill and Roxie Dreher, Dee and Earl Cobb, Dave and Karen Dreher, and Donnie and Teresa Dreher; many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
