Beverly A. Satern, daughter of Leland and Josephine (Coakley) Boblit, was born Aug. 21, 1932 in Emmetsburg. She and her four siblings grew up on a farm without the convenience of indoor plumbing. She graduated from Ringsted High School in 1950, where she was a class officer and a cheerleader.
After high school she worked as a house keeper, a grocery store clerk, and other jobs, even modeling clothing for Ella Hammer’s clothing store in Emmetsburg. She met and dated James George Satern, a Korean War Veteran, and after a long courtship, they wed on Feb. 16, 1958, in Fairmont, MN. Bev always said it was one of the coldest days of the year. They were blessed with five children.
Bev was employed in various jobs around Emmetsburg, including office work for Lehman’s Dairy and Par Office Supply, and as manager for the State Liquor Store, Riviera Theater, and Video Warehouse, and in later years, the Senior Center dining program.
She was a member of the Red Hat Society and also served as a board member for the Emmetsburg Low Rent Housing Agency.
Bev loved dancing with her husband at dances around the area. She enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed mystery novels. She was always ready for a trip to casinos and loved the times she had with friends celebrating birthdays and attending Red Hat activities.
Bev died peacefully on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her huband, James, her parents, Leland and Josephine Boblit, a sister, Marjorie Nitchals, and a brother, Eugene “Gene” Boblit.
She is survived by her children, Timothy J. (Becky) Satern of Aurora, CO, Thomas J. (Pam) Satern of Hiawatha, Tamara J. (Ron) Laue of Spencer, Teresa J. Van Ness of Spencer, and Troy J. Satern of Emmetsburg; two sisters, Darlene Stewart of Mount Prospect, IL and Berniece Mansager of Eagle Bend, MN; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
