Donna M. Kunz 1936-2016
Funeral service for Donna?Kunz of Emmetsburg was Wednesday, May 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Donna Mae Kunz, daughter of Charles and Julia (Metcalf) Gates was born June 8, 1936 on a farm in Buchanan County, Iowa. She received her education in the Rowley Consolidated School. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She started her teaching career at the Ruthven school in 1956. From there, she taught in Boone and Webster City, and she came back to the area to teach in Cylinder.
On June 9, 1965, Donna was united in marriage to Raymond Kunz. She finished her teaching career in Emmetsburg after 42 years of continuous teaching, retiring in 1998. All of her teaching career was with kindergarten or first grade students. Donna continued her college education over the years at Colorado State and the University of Northern Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UNI in 1963.
After retirement, Donna spent much of her time working with various non-profit organizations in the Emmetsburg Community, holding various leadership positions. The highlight of her volunteer work was being named, Honorary Irishman for 2005 and Citizen of the Year for Emmetsburg in 2011.
On May 1, 2016, Donna passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, at age 79.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, David Kunz and wife, LeAnn from Washington, IA; step-son, Raymond Kunz, Jr. and his wife, Kristen of Austin, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Raymond.
