John G. Vaughan 1932-2016
A Mass of Christian Burial for John Vaughan of Emmetsburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Clem Currans is the celebrant.
Interment is in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. Military rites will be conducted at the grave site by members of V.F.W. Post #2295, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
John Gerald Vaughan, son of Steve and Mary (Flynn) Vaughan, was born March 13, 1932 on his family’s farm near Mallard. He received his education in Mallard graduating from Mallard High School in 1951.
In ninth grade Johnny met his high school sweetheart, Vonita Auten, who he later married. Johnny served in the United States Army. He was stationed on the Czechoslovakia and Germany border where he was a lineman.
After being honorably discharged from the service, Johnny began working at the Emmetsburg Grain Company where he was employed for 45 years, before his retirement.
On June 14, 1958 Johnny was united in marriage to Vonita Auten in Mallard. To this union five children were born.
Johnny was a member of Holy Family Parish where he served many years as an usher. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg.
Johnny enjoyed going to Ken Krause Motors for coffee with his buddies. Johnny and Vonita enjoyed collecting antiques and Johnny especially liked collecting lunch boxes and cigarettes. He liked watching western movies and T.V. shows. Johnny was particularly proud of growing up as a “river rat” and of his 100% Irish heritage.
Johnny passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant daughters, Mary and Marie; brother, Pat Vaughan; brother-in-law, Dennis Schumacher; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Viola Auten.
He is survived by his wife, Vonita of Emmetsburg; his children, Joni and Ron Skowzgird of Rice Lake, WI, Jerry and Sue Vaughan of Lawton, OK, and Gene and Tracy Vaughan of Elk Grove, CA; seven grandchildren, Austin (Emily) Hagen, Adam (Cassie) Hagen, Allyson (Billy) Orr, Alexa Vaughan, Emily Vaughan, Jeremiah Vaug-han and John Vaughan; great grandchildren Miriam Hagen, Nicholas and William Orr, and Aidan Vaughan; brother, Tom (Fran) Vaughan of Mallard; sister, Mary Ellen Schumacher of Mallard; brothers-in-law, Virgil (Jo) Auten, Jr. of Mallard, and ValDean (Karen) Auten of Mallard; nieces and nephews.
