Mary F. Weiland 1923-2016
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary F. Weiland of Emmetsburg will be held Saturday, April 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant is the Rev. Clem Currans.
Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Friday, April 8, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, with C.D. of A. Rosary at 4 p.m. and Parish Vigil Service at 7 p.m.
Mary Fitzpatrick Weiland, daughter of Bart and Annie (Donahue)?Fitzpatrick, was born March 2, 1923, in Emmetsburg. She began her education in country school and completed her education at St. Mary’s Academy, graduating in 1941. Following high school Mary attended Cedar Falls Teacher’s College where she earned her teaching certificate.
After completion of her certificate, Mary returned to Palo Alto County where she taught in country school south of Emmetsburg.
On Sept. 20, 1948, Mary was united in marriage to Arthur F. Weiland at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. They made their home in Wisconsin for a short time before moving back to Emmetsburg. They were blessed with four children.
Mary was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Emmetsburg and Garden Club. Mary was very involved with the St. Patrick’s Association for countless years, helping in any capacity she was needed. She and Art hosted the dignitaries for many years, seeing that they made it to every event scheduled on time. Mary was also instrumental in the development of the Robert Emmet Society which she was proud to be a member of. She also donated her talent by playing the organ at the Emmetsburg Care Center.
Mary enjoyed playing cards, sewing, gardening and reading. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was very proud of her family. Mary expounded on her skill of writing by becoming a news correspondent for the Fort Dodge Messenger.
Mary moved to Omaha, NE, two years ago to be near her family. She passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016, in Bellevue, NE, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; brother, John Fitzpatrick; and a grandson, Benjamin Meyer Weiland.
She is survived by her children, Rosemary (Clarence)?Lind of Omaha, NE, Dr. Robert (Diane)?Weiland of Greenfield, Margaret “Peg”?(Jim) Heidesch of Remsen, and Gregory (Peg) Weiland of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Michael and Stacy Lind and their daughter Lucy; Matthew and Kysa Lind and their daughter Nora; Anne-Marie Lind, Brennan Weiland, Breanna Weiland, Gered and Kaitlyn Heidesch, Matthew Weiland, and Katie Weiland; her sister, Liz Culligan of Emmetsburg; nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.
