Ione Lorraine Kenne was born on Nov. 19, 1920, in Emmetsburg, to Alfred and Beulah (Lawhorn) Nelson. Ione graduated from Emmetsburg High School, and attended one year of college there. During that time she met Raymond Kenne, her husband to be, roller skating. Ione followed Ray to San Diego, CA, where they were married on April, 24, 1943. The couple then moved to Pensacola, FL, where Ray was stationed in the U.S. Navy, and then moved back to Whittemore in 1946. The family of two became a family of five with the births of two sons and a daughter.

Ione enjoyed her time as a mother, a bookkeeper for Ray and working as a funeral attendant for the Geilenfeld-Schaaf Funeral Home. What she enjoyed the most was her family. In 1979 she and Ray rented a cabin at a resort in Southern Minnesota for the family and started the tradition of a weeklong family get together. Her grandchildren were special to her, and she was overjoyed when two of her great-grandchildren, Connor and Courtney, were born on her 80th birthday.

Besides her family, Ione also enjoyed raising a garden and flowers, sewing, quilting and traveling. She was also considered by her family to be the world’s best cookie baker. Ione was a kind and thoughtful woman. She often worried about others traveling when they visited. She wanted them safe arriving to her house and back home afterwards. She also worried that you had plenty to eat.

Ione was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Rosary Society.
