Claire Ann Smith 1984-2015
A celebration of the life of Claire Ann Smith, 31, was observed Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. On September 21, 2015, Claire passed away at the age of 31.
Claire Anne Smith was born September 21, 1984 in Reno, Nevada. She received her education in Reno and then entered Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, where she specialized in computer game development and programming.
Claire began her career at Edge of Reality in Austin, Texas, as a programmer working on games like The Sims 3, The Incredible Hulk and Dragon Age: Origins. She then joined BioWare Austin, a division of Entertainment Arts, during the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Once at Bioware Austin, Claire began her position as software security specialist and continued to contribute to the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic by establishing encryption as a deterrent against reverse engineering and hacking.
Claire was blessed with a brilliant mind and in her free time loved gaming. She operated a Twitch Channel where she streamed speed-runs, gameplay sessions and game development tutorials. Through her gaming and networking, Claire developed friends around the world, many of whom she was able to meet personally and further development friendships with.
Claire enjoyed traveling throughout the world and had most recently been in Asia with her mother visiting Thailand and Korea. Claire’s creative mind allowed her to lead a unique and exciting life. She was always ready for a shopping excursion or to experience a new adventure.
Her creativity, her brilliant mind, her humor, her love of everyone and her beautiful eyes will be missed by all who ever had the opportunity to be a part of Claire’s life. She was truly a gift to each and every person, who’s life she touched.
Surviving Claire is her mother and step father, Sheila “Sam” and Dr. John Carmichael of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her father and step mother, John C. and Leslie Smith of Reno, Nevada; her siblings, nieces and nephews, Whitney and Christopher Driscoll of Des Moines, Iowa, Jason Smith and his children, Jordan and Jaylinn Smith of Ottumwa, Iowa, Julia and Cody Humphrey and their son, Cole of Reno, Nevada, Megan Brown of Reno, Nevada and Jenna Carmichael of Pennsylvania; her grandmothers, Betty Clark of Ottumwa, Iowa and Gwen Carmichael of Emmetsburg, Iowa; as countless friends throughout the world.
Claire was preceded in death by her grandfather, Bob Clark.
