Scott David Barkve 1960-2013
Scott Barkve, age 52, of Emmetsburg died on Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial services were held Saturday, June 22, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew, with Rev. David Moore officiating. Burial was in the North St. John’s Cemetery.
Scott David Barkve, the son of Harry S. and Gloria (Hanson) Barkve, was born on Nov. 20, 1960 in Emmetsburg. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1979. He received his nursing degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1984, Paramedic degree from Western Iowa Tech in 1991 and Emergency Medical Service Instructor from the University of Iowa. He started working at the Palo Alto County Hospital in the maintenance department. As he continued his education he worked as an orderly, LPN, RN and Paramedic Specialist.
Education was always important to Scott. He had taught paramedic and nursing students at Iowa Lakes Community College. He was instrumental in working with the Iowa Lions Eye Bank to get law changed to allow nurses to become eye enucleators. He had worked in all aspects of nursing. Scott was selected to do educational ride along with the Cresco Fire Department.
Scott’s parents and brothers were very important and influential to him throughout his life. Religion was important to Scott. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he had served as an usher, Sunday School teacher, superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the board of Christian Education. Scott became active in Jaycees where he met many new friends.
Scott’s health diminished and he had to go on dialysis. Scott would like to thank Dr. Santella and staff at Dialysis in Spencer, also the outstanding care from Dr. Patricia Banwart and nurse Joanie, Dr. Congella and nurse Heather.
Left to cherish Scott’s memory are his mother, Gloria Barkve of Cylinder; two brothers, Gary Barkve of Emmetsburg and Jeff Barkve of Cylinder. He is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Harry S. Barkve, Jr., and a sister-in-law, Cheryl Barkve.
