Elaine F. Crane 1937-2012
ALGONA – A Mass of Christian burial for Elaine F. Crane of Algona, formerly of Emmetsburg, will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Algona. Rev. Edward Girres, Rev. Eugene Murray, and Rev. Dan Guenther will officiate.
Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery at Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Elaine Frances (Cole) Crane, daughter of Eugene Smith and Ethel Mary (Fitzgerald) Cole, was born July 6, 1937, in Emmetsburg. She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1955. She attended Marycrest College in Davenport, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1959. She accepted a teaching position near Bettendorf.
On June 24, 1961, Elaine was united in marriage to James H. Crane at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union two children were born. Elaine continued her career in education, teaching in Mallard and Emmetsburg for several years. She later taught higher education classes at Iowa Lakes Community College, retiring in 1996.
Elaine was a devoted member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and currently St. Cecilia’s Parish in Algona. She was very active in both communities. While living in Emmetsburg, Elaine was a member of P.E.O., Chapter B.K. and was a charter member and past president of the Progress Club. She was a 40-year member of AAUW, holding several offices, including the presidency. Elaine was a member of the Red Hat Society and served as a board member for Hospice of Palo Alto County for six years. She volunteered at the hospitals and clinics in both Emmetsburg and Algona. Since moving to Algona, Elaine became a member of P.E.O., Chapter B.W. and a member of the Stinson Prairie Arts Council.
Elaine was an accomplished watercolor artist, having created countless paintings, which most recently were displayed at the Stinson Prairie Art Center, in her honor. She also enjoyed golfing, gardening, photography, traveling, playing bridge, and using her exceptional skills as a seamstress. Elaine and Jim enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona. Above all, she treasured and loved her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Elaine passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Algona. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2012. Elaine vowed to find the joy in each day and continued bringing joy to others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Ethel Cole.
Surviving are her husband, James of Algona; her children, Jeanne Marie Mullenbach (Darrell) of Urbandale, and Steven Robert Crane (Natalie) of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Megan, Sara, and Grant Mullenbach and Andrew and Jack Crane; a sister, Mary B. Hannon of Palm Desert, CA; two sisters-in-law, Margaret (Jack) Lyons of Yankton, SD, and Marilyn Crane of Omaha, NE; a brother-in-law, Robert C. Crane of Iowa City; and ten nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Holy Family Catholic School in Emmetsburg, Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona, or Stinson Prairie Arts Council in Algona.
