Joan Lucille Lenertz was born in Algona on May 8, 1929. She was the daughter of Guy and Lizzie (Ward) Giddings of Burt. She graduated from Burt High School with the Class of 1950.
On Feb. 4, 1953, Joan was united in marriage to John Theodore Lenertz at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona. To this union nine children were born.
Joan was a homemaker and a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a person who gave her all in every endeavor. She had a sunny disposition and a warm smile. She loved people, and her loved ones recall her sharp wit and her humor, even under the most difficult circumstances.
Joan lived her faith and set a good example for her family and others. Joan was a gardener and canned much of the produce which she and John grew. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidery, quilting, cooking and baking. She was an avid letter writer throughout her lifetime.
After her children were older, Joan became a C.N.A. and worked at the Emmetsburg Care Center for several years. She was later employed at S.N.C. and retired from there after nine years.
For most of her life Joan was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven during the four years that she and John lived at The Villa.
After John’s death in March, 2011, Joan moved to Grundy Center so she could be closer to two of her daughters.
Joan lived life to the fullest until the end. Joan died on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, in the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, at the age of 83.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two beloved children, Douglas and Mary; six brothers; and five sisters.
Left to cherish Joan’s memory are her children, James (Kathy) Lenertz; Alan (Deb) Lenertz, John S. Lenertz, Gerald Lenertz, Barbara (Joel) Ehrig, Diane (Dave) Hatch, and Susan (Andy) Krepsky; 18 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Peggy) Sewick and Max (Lorraine) Sewick; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
