Patricia Kauffman 1934-2012

Funeral Service for Patricia Kauffman 78, of Emmetsburg was Monday, Feb. 20, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.

Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge.

Patricia Marie Domek was born Jan. 1, 1934, in Emmetsburg, the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Murphy) Domek. Pat was raised on the family farm south of Emmetsburg. She was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.

On May 2, 1953, Pat was united in marriage to Don Kauffman in Emmetsburg. She was a homemaker for many years, raising her six children and helping Don on the farm. Pat was always a devoted supporter of her children’s many activities and then her grandchildren’s.

Together, Pat and Don opened several businesses over the years in Emmetsburg, including Papa Don’s, Old City Hall and Time Out Lounge.

After her children were raised, Pat returned to college and finished her degree. She became a licensed realtor and broker – opening up her own office, Kauffman Realty. Pat was very proud of her job and being able to see the smile on someone’s face when they were buying their first home.

Pat was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the ladies rosary group. She enjoyed watching her family in sports activities, especially wrestling. She loved to read and go on camping trips. Pat was known for her sense of humor, her love for Irish singing, her dedication to her children and passing on strong values to themPat always had a zest for life and loved people!

On Valentine’s Day, Pat passed away at the Mercy Hospice Unit in Iowa City after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 78.

She is survived by her six children, Gary (Karen) of Emmetsburg, Deb Watson (Rodney) of Iowa City, Jim (Vicki) of Brownsdale, MN, Kevin (Christie) of Kansas City, MO, Dan (Bev) and Bob of Fountain Hills, AZ. She has 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and expecting three more great- grandchildren. Pat is also survived by her step-sister Diane Hagenson of Gilbert, AZ.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her mother, Helen; her father Arthur; and her godson, John Mehan.
