Ardis A. Swain 1914-2011

Ardis Aileen Swain was born in Clarke County, IA on Feb. 8, 1914 to William H. Herron and Olgal Touet. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1933. Following graduation, Ardis attended Osceola Junior College. In 1935, she began work with the newly formed Farm Security Administration.

Ardis married W.K. Swain in 1938, in Spencer, and to this union three children, Prudy, Stan and Suzanne were born. In 1954, the Swain family moved to Emmetsburg where they owned and operated Swain Auto Parts. Ardis worked in the office and front desk of the business until they sold it in 1975 and retired. Ardis and Kendrick spent the next five years traveling, and then they settled in Lago Vista, TX in 1993.

Ardis was active in the Wa-Tan-Ye Business Women’s Club (now Progressive Club) and in the Friday Club as an officer. She continued as a member in the Emmetsburg Federated Women’s Club. Ardis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg and she was active in both her circle and the United Methodist Women. In 2000, she was honored with a UMW Special Mission Recognition Membership. Ardis enjoyed cooking and entertaining. She loved people. Her family and friends were her joy.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, Ardis Swain passed away at the Emmetsburg Care Center.

Ardis is survived by her loving daughter, Prudy (Maris) Laipenieks of Burlingame, CA, and a son, Stan (Connie) Swain of Cheyenne, WY; three grandsons, Maris Jr. (Caitlin) Laipenieks of San Diego, CA, Alex (Emily) Laipenieks of Oakland, CA and Mason (Casey) Swain of Canton, AL; one granddaughter, Dr. Breck (Dr. Craig) McCarty of Gillette, WY; four great-grandsons: Jayson, Maris Jerald and Dylan Laipenieks and Jacob McCarty; and two brothers, Ralph and Robert Herron.

Ardis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kendrick in 1991; daughter, Suzanne in infancy; and her sister, Ruth Lauser.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Inurnment will be in North Lawn Cemetery, Spencer.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
