Vera “Peg” Peterson

RUTHVEN — Funeral service for Vera “Peg” Peterson of Ruthven is today, Thursday, July 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Luther Thoresen will officiate.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven is in charge of arrangements.

Vera Pethra Peterson, daughter of Gay and Mary (Skinner) Larson, was born March 15, 1932 in Storm Lake. She attended Ruthven Consolidated School, graduating in 1949.

Vera, who became known as Peg to her friends and family, was united in marriage to (Ralph) Vernon Sassman on June 14, 1953, in Jackson, MN. Vernon passed away in November 1959. Peg then returned to Ruthven to be near her family and raise her three children.

In September 1977, Peg married Bob Peterson. They made their home in Rock Rapids and Anderson, CA during their marriage.

Peg was employed at Gene’s Place, where she worked every afternoon for several years. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Peg passed away Monday, July 18, 2011, at the Community Memorial Health Center, in Hartley, at the age of 79.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Sassman; and a grandson, Shawn Murphy.

She is survived by her children, Dave Sassman of Ruthven, Cheryl Koel (Steve) of Primghar and Jan Murphy (Tom) of Ruthven; four granddaughters; and five great grandchildren.
