Harriet Conway 1916-2011
Funeral service for Harriet G. Conway of Emmetsburg was held Monday, July 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The celebrant was the Rev. Clem Currans.
Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Harriet Genevieve Conway was born to Sophia (Kowalewski) and William A. Krage in Winona County, MN on Sept. 24, 1916. Harriet graduated from Winona High School in 1933 and from Winona State Teachers College in 1937. The following summer she took graduate courses at Northwestern University at Evanston, IL.
Harriet taught English and Physical Education in Minnesota and Emmetsburg until 1943.
In December 1943, Harriet married James E. Conway in Ridgeway, MN. They moved to Emmetsburg where they resided for the rest of their lives.
After raising her family, Harriet taught at the Emmetsburg Catholic School part time and later full time in Cylinder, South Clay, Bishop Garrigan and St. Pat’s in Sheldon. She then began teaching Adult Basic Education for the clients at Horizons and later at Iowa Lakes Community College. She did this for 17 more years, until she fully retired at the age of 78.
Harriet was a member of Holy Family Parish and a former member of the CDA. She led the Rosary for over 20 years at daily and weekend masses.
Harriet passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011, at her home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 94.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Michael; her husband, James; a brother, William Krage, Jr.; sisters, Lucille Burke and Rosella Theis; son-in-law, Merle Grover; and granddaughter, Melissa Grover Lowman.
She is survived by ten children: Mary Grover of Spencer, Therese (James) Daniel of Mendota Heights, MN, Ellen (Roger) Picray of Emmetsburg, James F. Conway of Cresco, Margaret (Phil) Redenbaugh of Storm Lake, Elizabeth Gilbert of Modesto, CA, Jude (Jane) Conway of Clive, Kathy (Fred) Alva of Omaha, NE, Patti (Tom) Boyd of Papillion, NE and Tom (Jean) Conway of Las Vegas, NV; a brother, Tom (Bernie) Krage; sisters, Irene Feltz, Eleanore Stockum and Joanne (Jack) Harris; 36 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
