Roger A. Berkland 1938-2011
Funeral service for Roger A. Berkland of Emmetsburg will be Wednesday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. The Rev. Steve Ellerbusch will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 17, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Roger Alan Berkland, was born to Amos C. and Pearl L. (Knudson) Berkland, on Nov. 1, 1938, in rural Cylinder. Roger was baptized into Christian faith and later confirmed at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. Roger attended grade school at Vernon No. 7 in rural Cylinder. He completed his high school education at Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1956. Following graduation, Roger attended Emmetsburg Junior College, receiving his degree in 1958. He then enrolled at the University of Iowa, completing his undergraduate degree in 1960. Roger served in the Iowa National Guard following graduation.
On June 25, 1961, Roger was united in marriage to Linda Freeman at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. Roger graduated with a J.D. from the University of Iowa, College of Law in 1968. He and Linda made their home in Emmetsburg, where Roger began his law practice. He served as Palo Alto County Attorney from 1969 until 1976.
Roger was active in many professional organizations, including Iowa State Bar Association, Palo Alto County Bar Association, and Trial Law Association. He was a past member of the Iowa County Attorneys Association, serving as an officer. He also served on the Iowa State Bar Association’s Board of Governors for six years.
Roger was also very active in civic organization throughout Emmetsburg and Palo Alto County. He was a member of Lions Club International in Emmetsburg and a past member of the Lions Club in Cylinder. He was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Roger was very involved in the restoration of Five-Island Lake with the initiation and continuation of the dredging project, and serving on the Lake Restoration Board for many years. He had also served on the board of directors at Lakeside Lutheran Home.
When Roger was able to get away from his law practice, he enjoyed being with his family and friends. Roger loved the lake, whether he was out fishing or merely taking some time to just enjoy the beautiful view. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He also raised Arabian horses and enjoyed participating in horse shows.
Roger passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home at the age of 72.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Pearl Berkland; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Grace Freeman; his brother, Ronald Berkland; and two very close friends, S.J. Brownlee and Tom Guess.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee Berkland, of Emmetsburg; daughter, Terry L. Amato, and her husband, Dan, and their children, Natalie and Kristin of Emmetsburg; daughter, Pam Towne, and her husband, Doug, and their children, Mitchell, Molly and Garrett of Rye Brook, NY; daughter, Jackie Conway, and her husband, John, and their children, Tove and George of Mason City; son, Roger Grant Berkland, and his wife, Cathy, and their children, Brady, Adam and Nadia of Emmetsburg; brothers, Randall Berkland and his wife, Linda II, of Mankato, MN, and Ritchie Berkland and his wife, Cynthia, of Cylinder; sister, Janet Fremling, and her husband, Alex, of Sunny Vale, CA; and sister-in-law, Marlene Berkland of Woodstock, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family, which will be distributed to local charities.
