Kathryn Farrell 1929-2011

DENISON — Mass of Christian burial services for Kathryn Farrell of Vail, IA, will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 15, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Vail. Burial will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Vail. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements.

Kathryn Ann Farrell was born April 17, 1929, in Valley Junction, the fifth child of John Francis and Monica Williams Begley. She passed away at her home in Vail on Monday, April 11, 2011, at the age of 81.

She attended West Des Moines public schools where she had an early exposure to the music world, winning her first superior vocal music contest on her sixth birthday, and many more thereafter. She later attended St. Joseph Academy in Des Moines, graduating with the class of 1946.

She married Dr. E. Michael Scott in West Des Moines, and to this union four children were born: Michael, Conner, Rosemary, and Brian. She later married Don Farrell in 1962, and they settled in Vail in 1963, and to this union three children were born: Patrick, Fred, and Peggy.

Katie was active in Sweet Adelines, performing in several quartets and choruses. She was a charter member of the Crawford County Sweet Adelines chorus and served as its director. She composed and arranged music for the Barbershop style of singing, and formerly served as organist and choir member at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Vail.

Katie will be remembered in Emmetsburg for writing and arranging the song “The Spirit of Robert Emmet”. She sang the song at numerous St. Pat’s functions.

She was a member of the Sweet Adelines Association of Arrangers, Carroll Serra Club, Carroll County Iowans for Life, and an honorable member of the Robert Emmet Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don in July 2000; two brothers John Begley, and his wife, Mildred; Austin Begley; one sister, Rosemary Manieri and her husband, Paul; brothers-in-law, Robert Kurtz; Richard, Carl, Charles, Edward, and Gerry Farrell; three sisters-in-law: Johnetta Farrell, Mary Colbert, and Barbara Agan; and one niece, Mary Frances Manieri.

Survivors include seven children: Michael Scott and his wife, Gennifer of Emmetsburg; Conner Scott of Fort Collins, CO; Rosemary Van Gorder and her husband, Jim of Fort Collins, CO; Brian Scott of Berkeley, CA; Patrick Farrell of Council Bluffs; Fred Farrell and his wife, Kim of Fort Myers, FL; and Peggy Staley and her husband, Allen of Charter Oak; 13 grandchildren: Holly Van Gorder, Mary, Eileen, Erin, and Claire Staley, Olivia Caroline, Quinn, Molly, and Lilly Farrell, Jack Scott, Michael and Andrea Farrell; three step grandchildren, Jeff Harris, Ranae Forsyth, and Erika Thompson; one sister, Frances Kurtz of Des Moines; two brothers-in-law, Robert Farrell and his wife, Betty of Houston, TX, and Joe Farrell and his wife, Joey of Chariton; three sisters-in-law: Joan Farrell of Chariton; Bobbi Farrell of Altoona; and Cecilia Farrell of Yorkville, IL; other relatives and friends.
