Raymond L. Smith 1918-2011
Funeral service for Raymond L. Smith of Emmetsburg is Thursday, March 10, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond LeRoy Smith, son of Samuel E. and Nellie (McIlhatton) Smith, was born March 6, 1918, in Melbourne. He began his education in Maple Hill and graduated from Curlew High School in 1937.
On Aug. 20, 1940, Raymond was united in marriage to Esther Josephine Johnson at the Methodist Church in Mallard. To this union three sons were born.
Raymond and Esther moved to a farm near Curlew. They lived and farmed there for 65 years.
Raymond was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mallard and Emmetsburg. He served on the church board for both churches. He also served as an usher and Sunday School teacher in Mallard for many years. Raymond was county chairman for the March of Dimes and worked with area 4-H clubs and the county fair. He was a registered baseball umpire for high school and junior college level games.
Raymond had ponies and enjoyed taking them to parades throughout Minnesota and Iowa. He also enjoyed playing cards and bowling. Raymond loved being with his children and grandchildren. He and Esther celebrated 70 years of marriage last August.
Raymond loved listening to Esther play the piano and organ as well as listening to his family sing together. He was so proud of Esther’s talent and shared her joy of music.
Raymond passed away on his 93rd birthday, March 6, 2011, at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Evan Smith and Cecil Smith; a sister, Ethel Duncan; and a son, Harlan Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Esther of Emmetsburg; his sons, Raymond Brian Smith (Carolyn) of Addison, IL and Samuel J. Smith (Mary) of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter-in-law, Robin Smith of Aurora, IL; seven grandchildren, Michelle Padfield (Nick) of Bowie, MD, Kevin Smith of Algiers, Algeria, Charles Smith of Omaha, NE, Meghan Smith of College Park, MD, Andrew (A.J.) Smith of Dallas, TX, Katelynn Smith of Oklahoma City, OK and Brett Padfield of Bowie, MD; a brother, Francis N. Smith (Harriet) of Clarkston, MI; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Smith of Emmetsburg, Eleanor Smith of Emmetsburg and Helen Bringleson of Laurens; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
