Joyce Hobart 1921-2011
Funeral service for Joyce Hobart of Emmetsburg is Friday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Pastor Judy DePue will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Joyce (Johnson) Hobart, daughter of Roy and Vessie (Strickland) Johnson, was born July 10, 1921, in Laurens. Joyce graduated from Pocahontas High School.Joyce helped her father in the Pocahontas County Auditor’s office for a few years.
On Nov. 18, 1943, Joyce was united in marriage to Burt James Hobart in Fort Dodge. They made their home near Emmetsburg. Joyce was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker for her family.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women and church circle, serving as circle leader for many years. Joyce was a 4-H leader and enjoyed the Vernon Township Birthday Club of which she was a member. She was a sports enthusiast, and enjoyed bowling on women’s league as well as in mixed doubles. She also loved tennis, baseball and all of the sports that her grandchildren participated in. Joyce also made several quilts and did knitting.
Joyce passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 89.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Scott Peters; a sister, Marge Thornberry; and a brother, Merwin Johnson.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Peters Hennings and her husband, Merlyn of Milford, Marie Carlson and her husband, Stanley of Bella Vista, AR, Jim Hobart and his wife, Sharon of Emmetsburg, and Kathy Hobart of St. Peter, MN; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Palo Alto County Hospital Foundation.
