Ruth E. Mullen 1921-2011
Funeral service for Ruth E. Mullen of Emmetsburg is at 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, March 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Pastor Judy DePue will officiate.
Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg, with private family burial at a later date.
Ruth E. Mullen, daughter of Axel and Tressa (Reynolds) Olson, was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Ayrshire. She received her education in Ayrshire, graduating from Silver Lake High School in 1939.
On Feb. 14, 1941, Ruth was united in marriage to Robert E. Mullen in Spencer. To this union three children were born.
Ruth was a member of the Methodist Church in Ayrshire. After her marriage to Bob, they moved to a farm near Cylinder, where they lived until 1956. While living in Cylinder, Ruth taught Sunday School and Bible School at the Methodist Church. In 1956 Bob and Ruth moved to Emmetsburg where they joined the First United Methodist Church. Ruth was a Charter Member of the United Methodist Women, having served as President and Special Projects Chairman. Ruth attended the School of Missions and served as circle leader for many years. She was a member of the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Council. In 1978, Ruth was awarded the Special Membership Award from the United Methodist Women.
Ruth was also a member of the Pythian Sisters organization, having held several offices in the organization and had served on the degree staff.
Ruth was employed at J.C. Penney’s for several years and later was the bookkeeper for Mullen Steel Buildings.
In 2003, Bob and Ruth moved to the assisted living apartments in Ruthven where they resided for four years. They then moved to the Emmetsburg Care Center where they have made their home since September, 2007.
Ruth passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at the Palo Alto County Hospital, in Emmetsburg at the age of 89.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ralph and Darrell Olson; and four sisters, Vivian Olson, Josephine Campbell, Betty Christensen and Marilyn Olson.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Emmetsburg; her children, Ronald Mullen (Judy) of Emmetsburg, Janice Kischer (Karl) of Spirit Lake and L. James Mullen (Nohemi) of Edinburgh, TX; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and two sisters, LuEtta Bell of Laurens and Shirley Waters of Sun Lakes, AZ.
