Kathleen Elbert 1933-2011

Mar 1, 2011

A Mass of Christian Burial for Kathleen Elbert of Emmetsburg and formerly of Great Oak Township, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. A CDA Rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service is at 7 p.m.

Kathleen Helen Elbert was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Great Oak Township, the daughter of Matt and Esther (Delaney) Conlon. She was a graduate of Ayrshire High School, Emmetsburg Junior College and Iowa State Teacher’s College. She received her B.A. in elementary education from Buena Vista College.

On Dec. 26, 1959, Kathleen was united in marriage to Cletus Elbert at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire. Kathleen taught elementary school in Graettinger and Fort Dodge before moving to Emmetsburg in 1959 where she retired from the Emmetsburg Community School District in 1997. She spent many summers teaching reading and math.

Kathleen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed baking, flower gardening, playing cards, and staying in touch with family and friends.

She was fond of the memories made at the lake home at Lost Island. She always looked forward to the spring and fall so she could take care of Marte and Dad working in the fields. Kathleen and Clete enjoyed the many winters they spent in Texas, but they also enjoyed returning to Great Oak and Emmetsburg to be with family and friends. More than anything, she treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren, reading and playing games and attending their activities.

To her delight, one September morning, the phone rang, and she won a Volkswagen Bug. She and Clete enjoyed taking trips in the bug, and driving with grandchildren in local parades. One highlight each year was taking the “slugbug” through the St. Pat’s Parade.

After a courageous battle with ALS, “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” Kathleen passed away at the PARC Hall in Emmetsburg on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 with her family at her side. She was 77.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Cletus; three children, Marte of Emmetsburg, Maureen Bechard and husband, Michael of Eagan, MN, and Mike and wife, Jennifer of Rock Rapids; five grandchildren, Maddie Elbert, Jack Bechard, Josh Elbert, Chloe Bechard and Matt Elbert; sister, Colleen Rouse and husband, Harley of Spencer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Thomas and Robert Conlon; and her infant grandson, Issac.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Palo Alto County, PARC Hall, or ALS Association of Iowa.
