Velma C. Burgess 1920-2011
Velma Burgess of Emmetsburg passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 91.
Velma Catherine Burgess was born Jan. 4, 1920 in Lohrville, the daughter of William E. and Edna Bowman.
On June 30, 1938, Velma and Franklin Burgess were married at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. Velma and Frank farmed near Rodman until retiring to Emmetsburg in 1974.
Velma’s joy was her family, traveling, playing cards and “suffering” with the Cubs.
Velma and Frank were active members of the Cylinder Methodist Church and Emmetsburg Methodist Church. Velma was Past Matron of Clover Leaf Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star at West Bend. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and many other community organizations.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Kaye Curran of Emmetsburg and Colleen Wegener and her husband, David, of Largo, FL; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and daughter-in-law, Helen Day of Algona.
Mrs. Burgess was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; daughter, Margie Day; four brothers, Wesley, Donald, Dean and Jim; four sisters: Bertha, Ethel, Celia and Ella; and sons-in-law, Carroll Curran and Charles Day.
A Celebration of Life Service for Velma Burgess will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011.
